Promotora de Educación Superior de Andalucía has awarded SANJOSE Constructora the execution works of the Mare Nostrum – UAX University Campus for Universidad Alfonso X el Sabio in Málaga, covering a built area of over 50,000 square metres.
Located at the western end of the seafront promenade, the new campus will consist of three buildings spanning 27,146 square metres of land, divided into two plots: the Northern Plot (11,985 m²)that will house a single building (D7), featuring academic and administrative spaces, a cafeteria, outdoor sports facilities, and a surface car park with 266 spaces and the Southern Plot (15,161 m²)that will accommodate two buildings, which, for functional reasons, will be subdivided into five structures (A1, B2, A3, B4, and A5), containing teaching spaces, general services, and administrative offices.
The new campus aims to become an icon, a community hub, and a model for reciprocal exchange with its surroundings. Its design promotes a flexible educational model, fostering interconnection between the city, students, and the university's faculty and institutional bodies. The concept places people at its core, addressing their needs to learn, explore, and connect. The architecture is structured to enhance these interactions through a spatial hierarchy, transitioning from greater to lesser privacy and higher to lower concentration needs, resulting in a layout that encourages gradual social exchange. At the heart of the project is a central public space, a grand plaza that serves as the main point of connection. From this plaza, a north-south axis extends, linking various indoor and outdoor gathering spaces.
This is a sustainable project in terms of energy, society, and economy. From a climatic and landscape perspective, the design incorporates an axis providing shade and green areas, while minimising water consumption across the site. The opposing orientation of the buildings has been carefully planned to reduce heat gain, enhance mutual shading, and provide protection from southern exposure.
The UAX Málaga management estimates that the university will accommodate 4,000 students, supported by a faculty of approximately 250 professors and researchers, along with an academic administration team of around 100 people.
